GIANLUIGI BUFFON was urged to retire after a SHOCKING error cost his Parma team a goal in Italy’s second tier.

The legendary keeper, 44, had already seen a penalty fired past him moments earlier when he suffered a nightmare moment in the seventh minute of their match against Perugia.

Buffon received a back-pass from Jayden Oosterwolde when there didn’t appear to be any serious pressure on the Italian shot-stopper.

But when trying to move the ball onto Enrico Del Prato, the keeper produced an embarrassing air kick which Perugia striker Marco Olivieri pounced on.

Buffon attempted to make amends by chasing the ball down but there was nothing he could do to stop Olivieri from tapping home to double the home side’s lead.

Reacting to the woeful error, one social media user said: “Hate seeing Buffon like this. At this point just pack it in and retire.”

Another added: “Buffon started his professional career around the same time I started primary school.

“I think it’s time to hang up them boots.”

And a third said: “Sometimes, you need someone to tell you that it’s time to call it a day. Even if your name is Gigi Buffon.”

Parma did get a goal back in the second half of the match but Perugia hung on to win the game 2-1.

He has played 25 league matches for the second tier side and had hoped to help the club return to the top flight.

But Parma sit way down in 13th place as they head into the final two games of the season.

Buffon won 10 Serie A titles across a 17-year spell with Italian giants Juventus.

He also claimed the World Cup with Italy in 2006, but the Champions League is the one trophy which has continually evaded him.
