Aaron Ramsdale has spoken about his famous celebrations during Arsenal’s recent 3-1 win against Manchester United.
The north Londoners secured a vital win against Ralf Rangnick’s men thanks to goals from Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting for the away side. However, it nearly went very differently as United playmaker Bruno Fernandes had the opportunity to tie the score at 2-2 after United were awarded a penalty at the beginning of the second half.
Fernandes eventually fired his spot-kick off the outside of the post before Gunners goalkeeper Ramsdale celebrated right in the face of the forlorn-looking Portuguese international. Speaking about his reaction on That Peter Crouch Podcast, Ramsdale said: “It was good (expletive), but I think it got blown out of proportion because there was five or six Arsenal players in front of me so I celebrated with them.
It looked like it, I probably had that (Martin Keown’s celebration against United in 2003) in my head a bit and then stopped halfway, but it’s just emotion. It’s nothing to do with him [Fernandes] or to do with the football club or anything like that.
It was just pure emotion.” Ramsdale also took the time to respond to some criticism he received after gleefully waving to Chelsea supporters during Arsenal’s 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge last month. “I find it quite funny how other players or fans can do what they want to goalies who stand there on their own for 90 minutes getting abused,” the England international said.
“I waved at a Chelsea fan the other week, who was giving me all sorts in the second-half, so when we scored the penalty I waved at him and security guard said, ‘why did you do that? Was it necessary?
“I said, ‘you’ve listened to everything he said, he has called me every name under the sun, but I can’t simply wave’. It’s enjoyment for me.”
